travel fun: cienfuegos, cuba

day two, part one
day two in cienfuegos began with a stunning sunrise. it was an omen that we were in for a great day!
relaxing at the yellow house before breakfast
ann is an artist and was drawing the scene in front of her
the kitchen where they prepared our breakfast
good morning cienfuegos! classic car heaven #classiccarsofcuba

the scenery en-route to our first stop of the day, the botanical gardens
our guide cecelia at jardin botanico soledad de cienfuegos
one of the amazing trees in this botanical garden. it is a shaving brush tree. the white flowers are very soft.
 me at the botanical garden
fuchsia flowers
 the garden is quite large.
 bamboo tree
the leaves on this tree were fluttering in the wind and sounded like a loud fan. it was crazy how loud it was.
 mini trees
 our tour group
one of the trees in the garden that is referred to as an elephant foot
 me with the bamboo
this seed is a gum that the people would chew. it didn't taste very good, but it gave your mouth something to do
these are coralline seeds. the people in cuba use them to make bracelets and necklaces. they are a bright orange color and they are stunning in the jewelry.
another elephant tree in the garden
this is an ebony tree. it is more than 100 years old. ebony is a beautiful wood
this is called a monkey trap. there is a piece of fruit inside these seeds that look somewhat like beehives. the monkey would try to pull the piece of fruit out of the see and the can't because the fruit is bigger than the hole. i can see a lot of confused monkeys out there...
this is called a sausage tree fruit. the fruit are so big that the only animals that eat them are hippos and rhino's. that is a big piece of fruit!
these are the purple flowers that bloom on the sausage tree. they only bloom at night. these were already drying up and it was early in the morning.
you can see the sausage tree fruit hanging in this tree. i think it would hurt if one of those bopped you on the head
this is what the purple flowers of the sausage tree look like before they bloom
this is what they look like after the flowers fall off
more monkey traps. i think they are so cool. nature is amazing.
if you look closely, you can see a lot of monkey traps
this is stan. i think he is adorable. his shirt has one of my favorite quotes "outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. inside of a dog, it's too dark to read". (groucho marx) stan was honestly one of my favorite people in our tour group!
 beautiful flowers in the garden
 prior to blooming
this is a tarantula hole. they come out at night (thankfully). ew! i have spiders!
one final pic of the botanical gardens. it was stunning and i learned a lot. i had a great time.
